Blue Armadillo.
8 x 8 cm

I made this medal to celebrate the scientific development of research on leprosy disease. The bacteria that causes leprosy can regenerate the organ, and this experiment was successful on Armadillo, led by Prof Anura Rambukkana, a research group in Edinburgh.

For people who are curious, the most interesting part of the making was patination. To make the blue colour on bronze,

1. Apply salt water on the surface- This acts as an electrolyte.
2. In the closed container, leave the bronze piece and a cup of ammonium hydroxide.
3. Leave it for a day.
This forms a presumably complex ion of Cu(II) and NH3. It‘s a really simple but cool chemical reaction. If it were pure copper, the blue would be stronger.

I really appreciate the science group & RCA staff who helped the process a lot.
