Currently, dependencies.sh doesn't fail if makeinfo is not present and only displays a message that can easily be lost. The user will then encounter the issue later, when it is more difficult to understand what's happening. Compared to the original patch, the patch included in Buildroot manually does the change to the ./configure script itself. The main macro is called GENTARGETS and works similarly to the AUTOTARGETS macro that already exists for autotools-based packages.
